SHOOTING RANGE DEFENSE
Attorney Martha Dean is a Life NRA member known for defending outdoor shooting ranges. In 2012, she received the NRA’s award for her work on behalf of the Second Amendment and Freedom in Connecticut. Her client’s cases have established national precedents favorable to ranges under the federal hazardous waste laws and the federal Clean Water Act. She has successfully defended ranges in Connecticut and Iowa state courts and in federal court, establishing precedents favorable to shooting ranges nationwide.
In Connecticut, Attorney Dean successfully defended the Metacon Gun Club of Simsbury and the historic Blue Trail Range of Wallingford in a series of lawsuits in state and federal court aimed at shutting down these important ranges. In 2013, working together with local counsel in Iowa, Attorney Dean successfully defended a municipality that was sued over a lease that allowed a shooting range to operate on municipal water company land. The favorable decision was appealed by the developer, however it has been upheld in 2014 on appeal.
Attorney Dean serves as special litigation counsel to ranges nationwide, helping local counsel devise successful strategies for defeating developers and anti-gun groups that try to shut down ranges. She also works with sportsmen groups who are establishing new ranges. In 2012, Attorney Dean taught “Defending Shooting Ranges: Winning Litigation Strategies” at the NRA’s National Firearms Law Seminar in Saint Louis, Missouri. In 2009 Attorney Dean taught “Defending Shooting Ranges” at the NRA’s Range Design Seminar in Providence, Rhode Island.
